This solution typically contains propylene glycol or glycerol, nicotine, and flavouring agents. Indeed, the "vapor" may have a lot more than those five ingredients listed above. Some studies have found it to contain lead, nickel, tin, and silver from the machinery inside the devices along with formaldehyde, manganese, tolulene, and other ingredients linked to cancer, central nervous system problems, and other possible health issues. A 2018 study of e-cig smokers’ urine found at least five of the same carcinogens found in cigarettes.
However, a major concern about vaping is its attraction for young people. And, while it’s safe when taken orally as a supplement or used on the skin, it’s likely an irritant when inhaled. They observed, on average, a 34 percent reduction in the femoral artery’s dilation. These findings suggest that vaping can cause significant changes to the inner lining of blood vessels, said study lead author Alessandra Caporale, PhD, a post-doctoral researcher in the Laboratory for Structural, Physiologic, and Functional Imaging at Penn. In this study, the researchers examined the impact of an e-cigarette that contained propylene glycol and glycerol with tobacco flavoring, but no nicotine, which study participants took 16, three-second puffs from. To evaluate vascular reactivity, researchers constricted the vessels of the study participants’ thigh with a cuff and then measured how quickly the blood flowed after its release. Using a multi-parametric MRI procedure, researchers scanned the femoral artery and vein in the leg before and after each vaping episode to see how vascular function changed.

Vaping can cause breathing problems, organ damage, addiction and other conditions. Lots of people want to know about the health effects of e-cigarettes. They’re still a relatively new product, so it’s too soon to know for sure. This is because e-cigarettes don’t contain cancer-causing tobacco, and most of the toxic chemicals found in cigarettes are not in e-cigarettes. High rates of vaping are "especially concerning given the rate of youth and young adults using these products," she said in a university news release.
That figure is controversial and might be a little high, says Kenneth Warner, a tobacco policy researcher at the University of Michigan. But, he adds, "The worst critics of e-cigarettes would probably argue they're a half to two-thirds less dangerous. But from a practical view, they're probably on the order of 80% to 85% less dangerous, at least." A 2015 expert review from Public Health England estimated e-cigs are 95% less harmful than the real thing.
Beginning August 1, 2019, Minnesota law prohibits the use of these products indoors where cigarette use is prohibited, including bars and restaurants. A 2021 study found that daily e-cigarette usage among tobacco smokers can increase the likelihood of quitting smoking eightfold. Researchers assessed data from the 2014–2019 Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) study, focusing on smokers who were not planning to quit smoking at the start of the period. However, a 2019 study into the long-term health effects of vaping found that people using e-cigarettes had a higher risk of respiratory disease than people who never smoked. The authors first created a comprehensive database of tobacco product flavor prohibition and restriction laws across the United States, including both state and local statutes. To date, there is no state excise or special tax placed on e-cigarettes.

Vaping may have some benefits for smokers who switch to it as a complete substitute for using other tobacco products. E-cigarette manufacturers are using marketing tactics used by the tobacco industry to lure kids to conventional cigarettes.
In this article, we discuss the risks of vaping versus smoking and consider the long-term effects and risks of both. In light of these results, policymakers might want to consider other approaches to protect public health where tobacco is concerned, the authors wrote in the study. Of the increase in cigarette sales, 71% were of non-menthol cigarettes, suggesting that restrictions on menthol cigarettes would not counteract this effect. The primary outcome of interest was volume sales of conventional cigarettes and e-cigarettes per capita, during each four-week period, both overall and by type of flavor. Cigarette volumes are measured in packs, while e-cigarettes are standardized to 0.7-milliliter units, given past industry claims that one 0.7-milliliter vape pod is equivalent to 20 conventional cigarettes, or one pack.
The cytotoxic and pro-inflammatory effects of different e-cigarette flavouring chemicals were also tested on two human monocytic cell lines—mono mac 6 (MM6) and U937 [86]. Also, all the tested flavours produced significant levels of ROS in a cell-free ROS production assay. Finally, diacetyl, pentanedione, O-vanillin, maltol, coumarin, and CAD induced significant IL-8 secretion from MM6 and U937 monocytes [86]. It should be borne in mind, however, that the concentrations assayed were in the supra-physiological range and it is likely that, once inhaled, these concentrations are not reached in the airway space.
Probably the worst thing a parent could do for their child would be to buy an e-cigarette under the misconception that this might prevent them from smoking regular cigarettes, Krishnan-Sarin says. She encourages parents to talk openly and freely about vaping—with the caveat that they provide accurate information. "I think the problem is that parents lose credibility if they say something to try and convince their child, who then finds out that it isn’t true," she says. Vape pen and e-cigarette explosions from overheated, defective and/or modified device batteries have occurred, causing injury and serious health problems to users. E-cigarettes come in many shapes and sizes and can look like usb rechargeable electronic cigarette lighter flash drives, pens, and other everyday items. Larger devices, such as tank systems or "mods," do not look like other tobacco products.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that nicotine can also harm parts of the brain that control attention, mood and impulse control. Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS) represent a rapidly changing class of tobacco products known by many different names, including e-cigarettes, e-cigs, vapes, mods, and tank systems. ENDS deliver an aerosol to the user that typically contains nicotine, propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin and flavoring chemicals. In 2018, 3.2% of U.S. adults (age 18 and older) reported current ("every day" or "someday") use of ENDS. Since 2014, ENDS have been the most used tobacco product among U.S. youth. In 2020, about 3.6 million U.S. youth, including about 1 in 5 high school students and 1 in 20 middle school students, reported current (past 30 day) use of ENDS.

On the rare occasions I partake, instead of filling my nostrils with the taste of a warm crème brûlée, my mouth tastes like a street gutter for an hour. I like the nicotine, but everything else about the experience is viscerally revolting. About 43% of the study participants were LGBTQ+ adolescents, for instance, and research suggests that LGBTQ+ young people smoke and vape at a higher prevalence than their non-LGBTQ+ peers. The new study included a diverse group of adolescents, indicating how the text message program could be helpful for marginalized communities, said Dr. Suchitra Krishnan-Sarin, a professor of psychiatry at the Yale School of Medicine. "Text messaging is a scalable and cost-efficient approach to delivering vaping cessation treatment on a population basis," the researchers wrote in the study.
The FDA has the legal authority to regulate tobacco products containing nicotine from any source, including synthetic nicotine. In 2016, the FDA established a rule for e-cigarettes and their liquid solutions. Because e-cigarettes contain nicotine derived from tobacco, they are now subject to government regulation as tobacco products.
If you’re scratching your head and wondering what @AskTSA is, it’s a small team of TSA professionals from various agency offices who answer TSA related questions from the traveling public that are sent via Twitter. You can read more about the program in this recent USA Today article. "It has become clear to me that e-cigarettes cause their own set of diseases that seem to impact just about every organ in the body—from the brain to the bladder." Critics of e-cigarettes fear that vaping will get kids hooked on nicotine and that they'll "graduate" to cigarettes when they want a bigger kick, Warner says. Vaping worked in a month, and she's been off cigarettes for more than two years. "I'm breathing, sleeping, and eating much better since I started vaping. My 'smoker's laugh' went away, and I no longer smell like an ashtray."
These products may have reusable parts, or they may be disposable and only used once before they are thrown away. Some damage to your lungs from vaping can heal or get better with medications. Over time, constant irritation to your lungs can lead to health problems (like asthma and COPD) that won’t go away. It actually creates an aerosol (or mist) that contains small particles of nicotine, metal and other harmful substances. Your tax-deductible donation funds lung disease and lung cancer research, new treatments, lung health education, and more. Youth and young adult e-cigarette users, many of whom never previously used tobacco, also need support to quit.
Meanwhile, some influential conservatives are calling for the Trump administration to hold back on its plans to ban flavored tobacco. They argue such a move would hurt small vape business owners and people trying to quit smoking. Many governments impose restrictions on smoking tobacco, especially in public areas. The primary justification has been the negative health effects of second-hand smoke.[124] Laws vary by country and locality. Nearly all countries have laws restricting places where people can smoke in public, and over 40 countries have comprehensive smoke-free laws that prohibit smoking in virtually all public venues. During World War I and World War II, cigarettes were rationed to soldiers.
E-cigarettes (often called vape pens) are battery-operated vaping devices that heat a liquid until it becomes an aerosol (mist), which is inhaled. It usually contains nicotine, other harmful chemicals, and flavorings. Even e-cigarettes that claim to have no nicotine have been found to contain nicotine. A non-smoker who uses ENDS may become addicted to nicotine and find it difficult to stop using ENDS or become addicted to conventional tobacco products. Further, many e-cigarettes are designed to allow the control of nicotine (which can reach dangerously high levels).
Replacing your cigarette with a cigar, pipe, e-cigarette, or hookah won’t help you avoid the health risks. The U.S. government has taken steps to restrict most flavored vaping products, effective in 2020. While this should reduce the number of flavored cartridges available in the United States, the guidelines are limited to products submitted for market authorization and don’t include those made at home or purchased online from other countries. Other studies suggest that while using e-cigarettes sends pollutants into the air, the concentration of these toxins drops quickly after someone stops vaping (much faster than cigarette smoke), but that doesn’t mean that the risk has gone away. Some, for example, will settle on surfaces, such as carpets or furniture, where small children might touch them or inadvertently ingest them when placing contaminated objects in their mouths.

Vaping involves using a device known as an e-cigarette—also called a vape pen, mod, or tank—to heat up a small amount of liquid, turning it into a vapor that can be inhaled. Most vape liquids contain substances such as propylene glycol and glycerol as base ingredients that create the vapor.
The ACS encourages adolescent users who find it difficult to quit to ask for help from health care professionals. Parents should learn all they can about e-cigarette use and be prepared to help their children get the assistance they need. In 2019, more than one in six (15.2%) New York City high school students reported using e-cigarettes.
"If there was good evidence that people were using e-cigarettes just to quit smoking, there would be wide support," Benowitz says. "The problem is most of the e-cigarette use in the U.S. is dual use with cigarettes." People use e-cigs in places or situations where they can't smoke, like in a restaurant, but continue lighting up when they can, he explains. "My reading of the evidence is that it is quite convincing that e-cigarettes are helping some people quit smoking." Many young e-cigarette users reported throwing away, improperly recycling, or littering the devices. Only 15% of young e-cigarette users reported disposing of empty pods or disposable vapes by dropping them off or sending them for electronic recycling.
According to the study, 40.1% of 1,018 adolescents between the ages of 14 and 29 surveyed said they refilled devices not intended to be refilled and 35.8% recharged the battery of vaping pods meant to be thrown out after one use. Others reported mixing nicotine and cannabis liquids in devices designed only for nicotine. The decision lends new credibility to vaping companies’ longstanding claim that their products can help blunt the toll of smoking, which is blamed for 480,000 U.S. deaths annually due to cancer, lung disease and heart disease. Some of the harmful substances emitted in secondhand e-cigarette aerosols are similar to those in secondhand tobacco smoke.
Despite this trend all current evidence finds that e-cigarettes carry a fraction of the risk of smoking. The 966 respondents who had never vaped more often believed that e-cigarette waste was dangerous to throw in trash compared to the 1,083 respondents who had vaped at least once (81.4% vs. 71%). Fewer of those who had vaped at least once (79.3%) believed that e-cigarettes contained toxic substances compared to those who had never vaped (89.6%). Young respondents clearly recognized the dangers of e-cigarette waste to humans and the environment and want an appropriate method to recycle.
E-cigarettes consist of a mouthpiece, an e-liquid chamber, an atomiser and a battery. The atomiser has a wicking material that draws the e-liquid onto a battery-powered heating coil. Optimal vapour production depends on an efficient supply of e-liquid to the heating coil, which is limited by the wicking and rate of e-liquid evaporation10,11,12. Power levels that produce aerosol beyond the ability of the wick to resupply the liquid to the coil may result in overheating of the atomizer coil and consequently overheating of the e-liquid10,11. Different types of wicking material, varying in size and shape, have been used in e-cigarettes3,13.
They do contain propylene glycol, but the concentrations are far below levels usually considered harmful. Though this might make the VITAs hit slightly harsher than vapes without this ingredient, it shouldn't pose much risk to your health. But levels are usually low and generally far lower than in tobacco cigarettes. Due to what has been called an ‘epidemic’ of youth use of these products, FDA has prioritized prevention efforts. The agency has taken a multitude of actions to keep ENDS out of the hands of youth, from policy making to enforcement to education. While e-cigarettes can generally be a lower-risk alternative for adults who smoke cigarettes, the use of e-cigarettes is not risk-free. These products deliver harmful chemicals and contain nicotine, which is highly addictive. Moreover, given the harmful chemicals found in e-cigarettes, further high-quality research on both short- and long-term health outcomes is needed. Electronic smoking devices (or ESDs), which are often called e-cigarettes, heat and vaporize a solution that typically contains nicotine. The devices are metal or plastic tubes that contain a cartridge filled with a liquid that is vaporized by a battery-powered heating element. The aerosol is inhaled by the user when they draw on the device, as they would a regular tobacco cigarette, and the user exhales the aerosol into the environment. Electronic cigarettes (E-Cigarettes) are battery-powered devices that function by heating a liquid into an aerosol that is inhaled by the user.
Currently, e-cigarettes are not mentioned in the Illinois Smoke-free Illinois Act, which prohibits smoking in virtually all public places and workplaces, but some local ordinances do include e-cigarettes. E-cigarette aerosol is not harmless; it can contain harmful and potentially harmful substances, including nicotine and cancer-causing chemicals. Despite that, e-cigarettes are more popular among U.S. teens than any other form of tobacco. Electronic cigarettes are battery powered devices that people use to heat liquid into a vapor that can be inhaled. Some studies have shown that vaping by some youth may be linked to later use of regular cigarettes and other tobacco products. Using e-cigarettes may play a part in some kids or teens wanting to use other, more harmful tobacco products. Although the term "vapor" may sound harmless, the aerosol that comes out of an e-cigarette is not water vapor and can be harmful. The aerosol from an e-cigarette can contain nicotine and other substances that are addictive and can cause lung disease, heart disease, and cancer.
This ban excludes disposable e-cigarette devices, which are sold in many appealing flavors and are relatively inexpensive. And are now the most popular type of e-cigarette used by adolescents. Nicotine is highly addictive and may lead to nicotine cravings and development of tolerance (the need to use more often in order to have the same effect). This is because the quality and safety of e-cigarettes has not yet been thoroughly tested, and it is not clear whether they are actually helpful for people trying to quit. Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes or vapes) simulate the act of smoking, but you don’t burn tobacco when you use them. Instead, the e-cigarette is a battery-powered device that works by heating liquid into an aerosol, which you then inhale into your lungs. Talk with your teens about the health effects of nicotine and e-cigarettes.
Research from The Johns Hopkins University on vape ingredients published in October 2021 reveals thousands of chemical ingredients in vape products, most of which are not yet identified. Among those the team could identify were several potentially harmful substances, including caffeine, three chemicals never previously found in e-cigarettes, a pesticide and two flavorings linked with possible toxic effects and respiratory irritation. "These cases appear to predominantly affect people who modify their vaping devices or use black market modified e-liquids. This is especially true for vaping products containing THC," explains Blaha. The American Lung Association will continue to urge FDA and Congress to remove all flavored tobacco products from the marketplace.
